Transformers with high vibration levels

ELEQ has designed a special line of low and medium voltage transformers for generator applications. The special ELEQ construction combines easy mounting with a high resistance for the vibrations in the generator application.

The GSQR is used for protection and measurement, e.g. power generators. When properly installed, the low voltage GSQR can be used also for higher voltage levels as the rated 0,72kV. The special ELEQ generator construction, makes it possible to use the GSQR in applications with shock and/or vibration requirements.

Compact and suitable up to 32A, meet the 5L6039

For a major roll-out of fiberglass KPN wanted to use new distribution cabinets. To keep the cabinets as compact as possible, a regular connection board was not ideal. Those are pretty large. Nevertheless was there need for supply in the cabinets, so ELEQ designed a perfect solution together with KPN.

The connection box 5L6039 is a compact solution suitable for 2 ground cables. The connection box is supplied with a sealed part for the network company where the network company can connect the ground cable. The other part of the connection box belongs to KPN, where an ABB kWh-measurement instrument is mounted in the connection box. The connection box meets the same standard as a house cabinet. In short, a solution which measures the usage of the cabinet.

Due to the compact design of the connection box, and because the box is suitable untill 32A, KPN can also use the connection box for other cabinets which need to be placed in the public space.

Retrofit and compact solution with TQ50-L

Eandis is the biggest energy company in Belgium. As they wanted to know if the maximum capacity was reached in their sub-stations they were looking for a compact and retrofit solution. Why a retrofit solution? So it wouldn’t be necessary to switch the power off in all the sub-stations

By using the ELEQ TQ50-L split-core current transformer, they can measure the current up to 1000A without disconnecting the voltage. Also in narrow situations the current transformers are very easy to install because of the smart construction, because the top-part of the TQ50 can be removed entirely.

Energy management systems

ELEQ designs and manufactures solutions for measuring, protecting, and connecting electrical energy. Decentralized generation, technological advances, and the search for sustainable energy mean that measurement and protection will become increasingly important. ISO 50001 contains clear guidelines on achieving structural energy savings.

Government regulations also have a strong influence on responsible use of energy. As of December 2015, large companies (>250 employees or >EUR 50 million turnover) in the Netherlands will be required to conduct an energy audit every four years in order to reach the European goal of a 20% energy reduction by 2020. Large companies in Germany with an effective energy management system will see a portion of their energy tax returned. These measures ensure that more and more of these management systems are put into place.

Because this often takes place in existing situations and the space is often limited, ELEQ has launched a new energy management product line consisting of a number of smart solutions for connecting and measuring electricity using split-core current transformers and sensors, really small current transformers, or a combination of current and voltage. ELEQ has also developed and launched a whole line of fused voltage taps.

In order to stay up to date on the possibilities and challenges involved in setting up a good and safe energy measurement, we have various energy management systems actively running at our branches. This has a number of benefits:

1)      We can measure our own usage and manage accordingly

2)      We can test our own products for usability, ease of installation, and quality

3)      We can fine-tune our product development to better suit the market

These systems will be used to properly respond to innovations and developments in the future.

Even faster the best solution

Beside producer of our end-products, we also produce a large amount of our tools and semi-finished products. To be able to produce our innovative end-products even faster, ELEQ has introduced a 5-axis milling device, the Hermle C 30 UP + PW800 since the start of 2014.

The Hermle can be used for complex mechanical treatments for a large range of metals and plastics. This makes us able to create tools even faster, to produce semi-finished and end-products with. Altogether, due to this equipment, we are capable to produce complex products even faster for our customer. At ELEQ, we never go for the simplest solution, but for the best solution, for you, as our customer.

Solar panels

Besides our reliable, accurate and safe measuring, protecting and connecting of electrical energy, ELEQ now also generates energy!

Since 31 October 2012 we generate electricity through solar panels on our location in Kerpen. In total we have 1084 solar panels with a total surface of 1791 m². With those solar panels we can generate 36% of the required energy we need in Kerpen. In brief, ELEQ not only helps you to become more energy efficient, we also produce our product with more durable energy!

Transient overvoltage

There are various causes for overvoltage in an electrical installation. The most common transient overvoltage is caused by lightning or switching events in the grid.

This means that components in the CAT IV area must be able to withstand a higher overvoltage than those in the CAT II area.

Short-circuit power and short-circuit resistance

Short-circuit power is the theoretical current that will run in the event of a short circuit if the protection has not yet intervened. This theoretical short-circuit current at the point of the voltage junction depends on the impedance of the voltage source (power-supply transformer, generator, etc.).

The short-circuit power can be calculated, but this can be difficult because not all data on the electrical installation is available in many cases. The standard value lies between 6 kA and 60 kA. However, as much as 150 kA must be taken into account for a voltage junction in a substation close to the power-supply transformer.

Safe Voltage Tap

Securing a voltage tap is an important part of ensuring a safe connection. When selecting a fuse, the short-circuit power must be taken into account.

A standard glass fuse can often only sustain a short-circuit capacity of up to 700 A. In the event of a short circuit caused by a glass fuse in a sub-fuse box, there is a high risk of an electric arc.

Current and voltage measurements

To gain insight into energy currents and energy quality it is important to measure both the current and the voltage.

The current is measured per phase of a field. This can be the supply field or the outgoing fields. Depending on the type of electrical installation and the meter used, the voltage is measured at one point in the installation. After all, the current on the supply field and the outgoing fields is different, but, under normal circumstances, the voltage is the same. However, in case the loss of voltage on an outgoing field has to be detected as well, it is necessary to measure the voltage on all outgoing fields.
